How OTC whitening chemicals might damage fabrics in the long run

Chemicals come with potential health risks. At the same time, administering over-the-counter whitening agents on garments can harm the fabric. There are several natural and eco-friendly options available and using the right bleach for your textile is absolutely crucial.

Check the labelling of your garment, if it has instructions to NOT use just about any bleaching agent because it could ruin the fabric. In others, bleach can wash away the coloured dyes and transfer them to other garments during washing. Bleach can be extremely powerful and that is why it is crucial that you use it carefully.

What OTC whitening chemicals can do to your fabric

Sodium silicates and metasilicates in the whitening agent can have an impact on the fabric. Chemicals containing chloramine can damage the permanency of whiteness, and the textile becomes yellowish.

Typically, OTC agents are not reliable and could lead to uneven bleaching or inefficient dosing. The alkaline properties of the chemical may remain in the fabric, destroying it. Additionally, any residual peroxide could also lead to uneven dyeing.

While using OTC chemicals might seem like a cheaper option and an easier solution to remove tough stains, its prolonged use might deteriorate the fibres. This is primarily due to oxidization, which breaks down the stain molecules to detach them. However, the effects can be harmful as clothes lose their whiteness.
